We are looking for 6 Teaching Assistants (TA) and 1 TA Coordinator for the lecture on “Statistics I: Inference and Regression” at the Hertie School.

This course offers an introduction to quantitative research methods for public policy. By the end of the semester, students should have a better acquaintance with quantitative methods conducive to empirical policy research and the ability to understand and critique the techniques employed by others. No prior knowledge of statistics is assumed and we will make every effort to address concepts both quantitatively and theoretically. Every student will attend a weekly lab session run by a teaching assistant in which concepts will be reinforced, where possible, through hands-on application using R. The goal of this course is not only to produce sophisticated consumers of quantitative research but to provide the necessary skills for students to conduct their own research. As such, we eschew the conventional stopping point for an introductory statistics course and spend several weeks on multiple regression.

Your tasks:

  • Prepare and teach two weekly 90-minute labs, for 12 weeks, in person or online, depending on course needs;
  • Attend and support one of the weekly Statistics I lectures;
  • Student support, of which at least 60 weekly minutes should be regular office hours;
  • Provide grading support and proctoring of exams and assignments for the instructor and assist with the development of the assignments themselves.
  • For TA coordinators: Coordination of all the labs and Exam wrap-up and additional tasks of TA coordinator.

Your profile:

  • Strong background in applied statistics (students at the PhD‐level);
  • Extensive experience with the R statistical environment;
  • Excellent pedagogical and communication skills (i.e., ability to explain key concepts in an intuitive manner for students with limited prior exposure to quantitative material).
  • Any previous teaching experience is highly valued.

We offer:

A stimulating international and diverse environment in multiple areas of social science, high-quality teaching and public policy. The Hertie School is a vibrant academic community that emphasizes excellence in research and teaching as well as an interdisciplinary perspective. Our school has been certified as a family friendly work environment in higher education and an equal opportunity employer. Severely disabled applicants are given preferential consideration in the event of equal qualification.

All contracts are issued for the duration of the Fall 2024 semester (01 August to 31 January). The total workload for a regular TA will be 173 hours (average of 6.7 hours per week) over the 6-month contract; The total workload for a TA coordinator will be 303 hours (average of 11.7 hours per week) over the 6-month contract.

Important: The actual weekly workload can vary over the semester and will be agreed upon with the supervisor. The teaching period runs from early September to early December.
