CIVICA Communications Manager (f/m/div)


The Hertie School in Berlin prepares exceptional students for leadership positions in government, business, and civil society. The school offers master’s programmes, executive education and doctoral programmes, distinguished by interdisciplinary and practice-oriented teaching, as well as outstanding research. Its extensive international network positions it as an ambassador of good governance, characterised by public debate and engagement. The school was founded in 2003 by the Hertie Foundation, which remains its major funder. The Hertie School is accredited by the state and the German Science Council.

We seek to fill the following position:

CIVICA Communications Manager (f/m/div)

on a full-time (40 hours per week) basis.

The contract shall commence as of 01 March 2022 and is initially limited for two years. You will lead the communication and dissemination activities for CIVICA - The European University of Social Sciences, an alliance of eight European universities of which the Hertie School is a member. Since 2019, CIVICA members have jointly developed innovative activities in education, research and civic engagement, with funding from the European Commission. The Hertie School is responsible for the implementation of the alliance’s communication work packages.

Your tasks:

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of a joint communication and dissemination strategy that promotes CIVICA’s work in education, research and civic engagement, in line with project deliverables
  • Manage the alliance’s central communication channels and oversee the creation of central content for a variety of purposes (online / offline) in collaboration with a small internal team and with external providers
  • Coordinate communications and research communications staff across CIVICA member universities to create and distribute regular content about the alliance’s activities
  • Actively collaborate with the alliance leadership, cross-campus teams of staff, faculty and students, and various Hertie School departments
  • Raise awareness of CIVICA’s mission and achievements among external stakeholders, including policymakers
  • Manage the associated budget and contribute to the administration and evaluation of the project

Your profile:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field
  • 5+ years of professional experience in communications, preferably in an educational or research institution
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant communication channels, tools and trends, and a proven ability to develop content for a wide range of channels
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English; fluency in German
  • Excellent collaborative, interpersonal and project management skills
  • Strong understanding of the European higher education and research landscape
  • Experience with projects funded by the European Commission
  • Interest in the social sciences
